CEDAW Award for Community Building

Ms. Pon has spent most of her tri-sector career working to bringing tools, resources and decision-making power to the underserved. First appointed by Mayor Gavin Newsom in January 2008 to head the Mayor’s Office of Community Investment, she currently oversees the Office of Civic Engagement & Immigrant Affairs, overseeing citywide 2010 Census efforts, civic participation initiatives, language and immigrant rights, and shaping inclusive policies that improve the lives of San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents. Prior to joining the City, Pon was CEO of Zeum, a next generation arts and tech museum; Interim Executive Director of the Asian Law Caucus; and Founding Executive Director of the Community Technology Policy Council, a digital equity policy group. In the private sector, mostly at Pacific Bell/SBC (now AT&T), she served as Statewide Local Government Liaison and External Affairs Director, developing public policy and innovative projects such as Women and Girls Tech Up!

A third-generation San Franciscan, Pon’s extensive volunteer service includes ten years as President/Commissioner on the SF Civil Service Commission; board president of The Women’s Foundation, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy, and the API Women’s Leadership Institute; Co-Chair of the SF 49ers Community Advisory Panel; and board member on the Alliance for Public Technology. She is currently an advisor to Global Education for Women Executive Leaders and Leadership California. Her recognitions include awards from the D.C.-based Center for Women’s Policy Studies, Leadership California, Greenlining Institute, and Pacific Asian American Women’s Bay Area Coalition. In 2008, she was named one of five “Women Who Could Be President” by the San Francisco League of Women Voters and a “Neighborhood Excellence Local Hero” by the Bank of America. Pon holds a master’s degree in public affairs/public relations, is a Lowell High School graduate, and an alumna of the Coro CityFocus, Leadership America, and Leadership California programs.

OLGA TALAMANTE, Executive Director, Chicana/Latina Foundation

Olga Talamante became the first Executive Director of the Chicana Latina Foundation (CLF) in January 2003. The Chicana Latina Foundation’s mission is the Empowerment of Chicanas/Latinas through their Personal, Educational, and Professional Advancement. Before coming to CLF, she held the position of Western Region Vice President of INROADS, a career and leadership development organization for students of color pursuing careers in business and engineering.
Ms. Talamante’s family migrated from Mexico to Gilroy, California in the early 1960’s where she and her family worked in the farm fields for several years. She is well known for her community activism and has worked with several service-providing and public advocacy agencies.

Some of her awards include: “Heroes and Heroines of the Latino Community”, from KQED-TV, the Diversity Award from Hispanic Magazine, the San Francisco Bay Girl Scout Council DAISY Award, and the Women Making History Award from the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women. She was recognized as one of the most influential Hispanics in the Bay Area by the SF Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the SF Business Times, and most recently she received the Latino Heritage Community Award from the City of San Francisco.

Currently she serves on the Board of El Concilio of San Mateo County; on the Board of the National Center for Lesbian Rights; on the Board of the Friends of the Commission on the Status of Women, on the Board of Tenth Muse Productions, on the board of the Greenlining Institute and on the Latino Advisory Council of the Oakland Museum of California.

She received her B.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz.

DAVID ASSMANN, Deputy Director, San Francisco Department of the Environment

David Assmann has been Deputy Director of the Department of the Environment since August 2000. From October 2008 through July 2009 and from January 2010 through August 22, 2010, he was the Acting Director of the Department of the Environment. Prior to August, 2000, he was the Recycling Program Manager for the San Francisco Solid Waste Management Program. Prior to being appointed Recycling Program Manager, he held the positions of Public Outreach Coordinator and Senior Administrator for the San Francisco Recycling Program. Before joining the City and County of San Francisco in July of 1993, Mr. Assmann was the Vice-President and Director of Information Services for Conservatree Paper Company. Prior to that, he was the publisher of Mother Jones Magazine.

Mr. Assmann is the Treasurer and a founding Board Member of the California Product Stewardship Council, a statewide organization dedicated to promoting Extended Producer Responsibility in California. He is also a member of the coordinating committee for Green Cities California, a coalition of ten of the largest local jurisdictions in California working together on environmental and sustainability initiatives.
Mr. Assmann was the chair of the Bay Area Working Group of cities and counties responsible for organizing and implementing the Save Money and the Environment Too campaign in the San Francisco Bay Area for five years (now known as the Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition). This innovative waste prevention campaign has won ten national and state awards, including the National Recycling Coalition’s Beth Boettner Award for Outstanding Public Education, the National Association of Counties Environmental Protection and Energy Achievement Award, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 9 Award for Outstanding Environmental Achievement and California Resource Recovery Association’s Award for Best Waste Prevention Program in California. In 1999, Mr. Assmann was the annual conference chair for the California Resource Recovery Association, chaired the host City organizing committee for the 2004 National Recycling Coalition Conference in San Francisco and was responsible for organizing the public workshops held during World Environment Day in San Francisco in 2005.

Susie Tompkins Buell, a native San Franciscan, is best known as the co-founder of Esprit de Corp, one of the world’s most successful and well-recognized junior sportswear brands. Under Susie’s spirited direction, Esprit’s products, groundbreaking marketing and innovative corporate culture revolutionized the industry.

In 1996, Susie sold Esprit to her business partners, retired from the clothing industry, and married Mark W. Buell.

Susie devotes her energy, creativity and resources to supporting many community organizations and national institutions that work to affect positive social change. She is passionate about increasing awareness of the global climate crisis and supporting Democratic politics and policies.

Susie is considered one of the top political fundraisers and activists in the nation. She has raised millions of dollars for Democratic candidates. She was on the Finance Committee for the Hillary Clinton for President campaign. She is active with the Democracy Alliance and Emerge: Women Leaders for a Democratic Future and she co-founded WomenCount.

Susie and Mark are the recipients of many humanitarian awards for their generosity and commitment to social change.

The Susie Tompkins Buell Foundation focuses grant making on programs that foster leadership training and empowerment for young women with the goal of filling the political pipeline with the next generation of women leaders.

Susie and Mark reside in Bolinas, California, a small coastal community north of San Francisco. She has two daughters, Quincey Tompkins Imhoff and Summer Tompkins Walker and two stepchildren, Sabrina and Justin Buell.

Susie is an intrepid traveler, an avid hiker and an organic food enthusiast.

Barbara J. Krumsiek is Chair, CEO and President of Calvert Group, Ltd., a leading investment management firm headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Calvert manages over $14 billion in assets in approximately 50 portfolios, including award-winning fixed income portfolios and a full family of sustainable and responsible equity mutual funds. Ms. Krumsiek is Director and Chair of Acacia Life Insurance Company.

At Calvert, she has presided over a period of strong growth and increased visibility both within the sustainable investment sector and in the financial services industry as a whole. Calvert’s presence among individual investors, financial advisors and retirement plans has expanded dramatically.

During her tenure at Calvert, Ms. Krumsiek has worked at the forefront in the socially-responsible investment arena. She has taken a particularly strong interest in such areas as board diversity and gender inclusiveness. Under her leadership in 2004, her firm developed the Calvert Women’s Principles, the first global code of corporate conduct focused exclusively on empowering, advancing and investing in women worldwide. These initiatives were recognized in June 2007 when Ms. Krumsiek accepted the Concern Worldwide “Women of Concern” award for ‘developing innovative and precedent setting initiatives that strive to empower women globally.’

In 2009, Calvert collaborated with Verité, the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), and gender advocacy and human rights experts to update and extend the original Principles. The revised code addresses emerging issues, and incorporates some of the most progressive contemporary policies and best practices. In 2009, these Calvert Women’s Principles were used as a baseline for the newly developed Women’s Empowerment Principles, the product of collaboration between UNIFEM and the UN Global Compact, and the Gender Equality Principles, a partnership among the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, Calvert Group, Ltd., and Verité.

CEDAW Award for Entrepreneurship

While working as a Critical Care nurse at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco in the early eighties, Sherri envisioned an opportunity to fill a shortage for temp nurses and nursing attendants in hospitals. This vision became a reality in 1984 when she founded Nurse Providers Inc which has since evolved and expanded into a Private Equity-backed, multimillion dollar home health company, Professional Healthcare. She is currently on the Board of Directors of Professional Health.

Passionate for care giving and elderly care, Sherri continues to touch the lives of thousands of seniors not only professionally but also through her active support for non-profit community organizations such as Peninsula Volunteers Inc, Seton Medical Foundation and Meals on Wheels, among others. Sherri never forgets where she came from and continues to give back to the country that helped her reach the American dream. She is actively involved and on the Board of Trustees of Ayala Foundation, USA – a California-based nonprofit organization committed to supporting social development of Filipinos in the Philippines.

MEG VASSEY, Executive Director, Tradeswomen, Inc.

Meg Vasey is the Executive Director of Tradeswomen, Inc. Meg has been a construction electrician for 30 years. She is a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 302, Martinez, California, and represents Local 302’s members as a retirement plan trustee. In 1998, Meg put down her tools to attend Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley, graduating and passing the California State Bar in 2001. Using her legal and construction background, Meg worked with the East Bay Community Law Center and subsequently with the Port of Oakland to assist in the development and implementation of the Port’s project labor agreement with its ground-breaking social justice program. At the Port, Meg focused on assisting a dynamic coalition of local contractors, community groups, construction trade unions and Port staff to increase the participation of local residents on Port construction projects. She has served as a consultant with owners, community groups and labor to promote sustainable job opportunities in the construction industry. Meg also serves on the Board for the Cypress Mandela Training Center, a nationally recognized non-profit pre-apprenticeship training provider located in Oakland, California. As Executive Director of Tradeswomen, Inc., Meg remains committed to furthering women’s opportunities in the non-traditional trades.

CEDAW Legacy Award

Barbara Kaufman was appointed Director of the San Francisco Regional Office of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in November, 2004.

Ms. Kaufman returns to public service after serving in city government since 1992, when she was elected to San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In her eight years on the Board, she had many legislative achievements, including numerous fiscal reforms, promotion of job growth through New Jobs Tax Credits, and the creation of the Department of Neighborhood Services. She is most known for re-writing the City’s Charter, which was overwhelming approved by the voters in 1995. It was during her second bid for the Board of Supervisors that she was the top vote-getter city wide, automatically making her the President of the Board of Supervisors.

Prior to taking public office, Ms. Kaufman was the founder and co-director of KCBS radio’s Call for Action, an all volunteer run consumer advocacy public service. This off-air “action line” helped consumers solve problems with their automobiles, housing, insurance, banks, warranties, taxes and more. KCBS management subsequently created a broadcast that became Ms. Kaufman’s own hour-long, live daily call-in show that eventually became the top-rated program at KCBS.
During this period at KCBS, she served on the Federal Reserve Board’s Consumer Advisory Council. Additionally, Mrs. Kaufman is the author of two consumer books, Barbara Kaufman’s Consumer Action Guide: Your Right from A to Z (NOLO Press, 1991).and a Pocket Guide to Consumer Rights, (NOLO Press, 1994).

Ms. Kaufman most recently served as the Chairwoman of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) and was a member of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).

The San Francisco Business Times has recognized Ms. Kaufman as a leader; she has been the recipient of the “San Francisco’s Most Influential Women in San Francisco” award for 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Ms. Kaufman has a B.S. from the University of San Francisco. She is married to Ron Kaufman and is the mother of three children and four grandchildren.

CECILY JOSEPH, Director of Corporate Responsibility, Symantec Corporation

CEDAW Legacy Award

Cecily Joseph is Director of Corporate Responsibility at Symantec Corporation, the fourth-largest independent software company in the world. Cecily oversees Symantec’s global corporate responsibility program, which includes environmental, social, and governance program development, integration, and alignment. As the company spokesperson on matters related to corporate responsibility, Cecily responds to stake-holder questions and concerns and oversees the company’s reporting and communication efforts. Cecily manages the company’s community investment efforts and sits on Symantec’s executive diversity steering committee. Cecily’s responsibilities also include coordination and design of Symantec’s corporate-wide global climate-change program. This program addresses a new go-to-market strategy around Green IT and includes internal and external communication, work with nonprofit organizations, and initiatives to reduce Symantec’s environmental footprint.

Cecily joined Symantec after twelve years with VERITAS Software, where she managed the company’s legal affairs and served as Executive Director of the VERITAS Foundation. Currently, Cecily co-manages the US Network of the United Nations Global Compact. She also currently serves as a director on several non profit boards including The Housing Trust of Santa Clara County, Abode Services, and Emergency Shelter Program.
